A good old-fashioned bar of soap isn't all that bad. A bar of soap cleanses your skin and removes sebum and other dirt. If you use soap, it's wise to nourish your skin afterward with a nourishing body lotion or cream.
Modern soap is pH neutral
Old-fashioned soap has a very high pH, while modern soap is made from synthetic, pH-neutral substances. This pH is close to that of your skin, so it degreases your skin without drying it out too much. As soon as soap comes into contact with water, it foams. This feels good, and the foam cleanses your skin. Soap often smells very pleasant, too.
Wash excess sebum from your skin
Sebum in your skin protects against dehydration and keeps it supple. However, if your skin produces too much sebum, you can get pimples. That's why it's good to clean your skin with soap. This removes excess sebum. However, the soap does dry out your skin somewhat. Use a body lotion to moisturize your skin after washing with soap.
Handy for air travel
When you fly, you're only allowed to bring small amounts of liquids. A bar of soap, however, isn't a problem. You can even take a bar of soap in your carry-on luggage, so you can quickly wash your hands while traveling. A bar of soap is therefore very handy when you're traveling.
Shower or bathe with a bar of soap
A bar of soap used to be a common sight. Every bathroom had a bar, often on a special rack. Toilets and kitchens also had bars of soap everywhere for washing hands. You'll probably recognize this too: dropping a foaming bar of soap, and it flying across the bathroom... Those days are largely over, thanks to liquid soap in a bottle.
Shaving soap
Shaving gel or shaving foam wasn't that common back then. Most people used shaving soap, which you apply to your skin with a brush. Soap provides at least as comfortable a shave as modern shaving foam or gel.
Some people swear by a bar of soap
There are still people who swear by an old-fashioned bar of soap. A block of pleasant-smelling soap you use to wash yourself or to lather up a washcloth.
